Her artwork, "Transfiguration", will be unveiled at the opening of the exhibit May 1, 2004, on the website. Three winners, sharing $2,000 in cash prizes, will also be named at the opening.
More than 300 entries from artists representing 19 countries submitted painting, printmaking, photography, drawing, etching, collage, fibre, sculpture, and digital works of art.
Curated by Susanne Iles and Patrick Byrne, the distinguished jury for the 2004 exhibition included: Steve Danzig, Australian digital artist and Director of the International Digital Art Awards, Mark Wagner, an accomplished digital and traditional American artist, and Wedlidi Speck, a First Nations storyteller, artist and addictions counsellor from Canada. The final member of the jury, Teri Degler, an award-winning writer from Toronto, Canada, had this to say about the artworks juried, "They were technically well executed; they had rich symbolic meaning, and their imagery was powerful enough to haunt me long after I had finished looking at the work itself...."
According to the Oxford Dictionary, symbolist art seeks special symbols to express the essence of things by suggestion. It engages the viewer by appealing to the heart, personality and unconscious mind, as well as the intellect. The purpose of this annual one-of-a-kind event is threefold:
- To promote symbolist art and its importance of leading the viewer's imagination into the unseen world of thoughts, hopes, and fears. Symbols in art are a catalyst to personal revelation.
- To provide artists from all backgrounds an affordable, convenient, and global venue to exhibit their work. Finalists and winners will be showcased for one year.
- To help art students gain exposure and bring together a diverse array of inspirational perspectives from around the world.
The International Juried Online Symbolist Art Show is an annual competition of symbolist art including surreal, visionary and fantastic genres. Complete details are available on the website.
